What It Is
As we age, fat deposits in both our face and hands begin to deflate, which is coupled with the loss of and elastin in your skin. This can cause skin to sag and have an uneven appearance, which can be a source of self-consciousness and concern for many.
Like the name suggests, dermal fillers are a minimally invasive treatment to create and restore volume to your skin that is lost through the aging process, or through improper care. They can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, treat facial volume loss, and act as an anti-aging treatment for hands.
Treatment Areas
Dermal fillers typically treat the following areas that are most impacted by volume loss in the face:
- Cheeks
- Smile Lines
- Temples
- Lips
- Jawline
- Chin
- Around the mouth
In addition, dermal fillers can be used as an anti-aging treatment for hands, which are often the first place we notice aging. Dermal filler treatments typically offered are Juvederm, Belotero, Radiesse, Restylane and Revanesse. Most fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, with the exception of Radiesse, which is made of a calcium suspension. Because it uses calcium rather than hyaluronic acid, Radiesse also helps stimulate natural production for longer-lasting results, as compared to a hyaluronic acid filler alone.
How to Prepare
Before your treatments begin, you will meet with a nurse injector who will devise a treatment plan based on your unique needs and concerns. They will also determine the best filler brand for your skin, that will help you reach your individual goals, as no filler is one-size-fits-all.
Leading up to your treatment, it is recommended to do the following to ensure you are well prepared and to avoid any potential complications:
- Schedule at least 2 weeks before a major social event to allow for any swelling/bruising
- Avoid alcohol 24 hours before your appointment
- Prep your skin with your regular skincare routine to ensure it is in the best possible condition
- Use sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays
- Avoid blood thinners up to a week before treatment to reduce swelling and bruising side effects (including aspirin and ibuprofen)
How It Works
Once your plan has been established, you can begin treatment with dermal fillers. The treatment itself, regardless of the brand used, involves injecting the filler into your skin in sessions of approximately 15 to 30 minutes. It really is that simple! As well, most fillers contain localized pain relief, such as lidocaine, so you wonât be in discomfort during the procedure itself, or immediately afterward.
Results You Can Expect
With all dermal filler treatments, results are immediate after your first treatment. The results will continue to improve over the following 14 days as the filler settles and naturally integrates into your skin. As mentioned above, Radiesse will also stimulate your skinâs production for additional improvements on top of the filler itself.
Depending on the brand of filler used, you may need multiple treatments to maintain your results. For Juvederm, this will typically be in a 6-12 month period for upkeep and optimal results. By comparison, for Radiesse, maintenance treatments are usually only needed every 1-2 years because of its additional features.
Potential Complications
A common concern is with fillers is that youâll very obviously look like youâve had work done. Not to worry! An experienced injector like those at APT Medical Aesthetics will ensure that you donât look like youâve had fillers, or end up with disproportionate features. The best results are those that look natural, after all!
That said, some swelling, redness, and bruising is possible immediately after the procedure, though this will be temporary. Most patients are able to resume their normal activities right away without issue. There are a few things to keep in mind as you are recovering and enjoying your results!
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after your appointment
- Avoid exposure to heat and sun where possible
- Use sun screen to protect your skin when outside
- Avoid strenuous exercise immediately after your appointment
- Apply a cold compress to the area as needed to reduce swelling and help with pain
