What It Is
A clinical peel is an exfoliating treatment that refreshes the skin, restores luminosity, and stimulates skin renewal. Chemical peels generally deliver more visible and corrective results than traditional facials.
Also commonly referred to as clinical peels, there is often a negative misconception about how these treatments actually work. In fact, chemical peels are the simplest and most cost-effective form of skin resurfacing, delivering visible results with minimal or no downtime.
Here at APT Medical Aesthetics, our newest generation of medical-grade chemical peels in Oakville are safe, suitable for most skin types, and can address multiple skin concerns at the same time.
Treatment Areas
Chemical peels can be applied to enhance the appearance of the skin on your face, décolleté, hands, and neck. They are suitable options if you are bothered by one or more of the following skin concerns:
- Dark, dull, and dry skin
- Ageing skin with fine lines and wrinkles
- Hyperpigmentation or brown spots due to sun damage
- Uneven skin tone and texture
- Enlarged and clogged pores
- Melasma
- Pimples and skin acne
- Light acne scarring
How to Prepare
APT’s chemical peels in Oakville can be performed as an outpatient in-clinic procedure.
- Skip tanning or avoid direct sun exposure for a minimum of 2 weeks before your clinical peel treatment. The sun’s ultraviolet light can make your skin vulnerable to side effects like darkening and scarring.
- Take a break from using personal beauty or skincare products that have retinoids like tretinoin for 1 to 2 weeks before your peel date, unless otherwise advised by your healthcare expert.
- If there is a lesion, infection, or open sores at the peel area, we may advise postponing the chemical peel in Oakville to wait for it to clear up as to not exacerbate the condition. We may also recommend skin treatment options to address it.
How It Works
Chemical peels deliver gentle and controlled exfoliation of the superficial layers of the skin using one or more acids (i.e. glycolic acid, lactic acid), or a combination of fruit enzymes. When these outer layers of dead and damaged skin are removed, fresh new skin cells emerge, and synthesis occurs. The result is softer, smoother skin that is more radiant and evenly toned.
A clinical peel takes approximately 30 minutes. The treatment is highly customized based on your skin type, skin concerns, and personal treatment plan.
- Once the appropriate peel has been selected, your skin will be thoroughly cleaned and prepped.
- The exfoliating solution is lightly applied with a brush, after which you will feel a warm or tingling sensation for several minutes. If necessary, a fan will be used to cool the skin.
- After a period of time, the peel solution will be neutralized (some peels are self-neutralizing) and post-treatment products will be applied. These may include treatment serums, masks, recovery creams, or sunblock.
Results You Can Expect
Results may vary per person but most of our clients share that they see astounding results after their skin has stopped peeling. They see that their once dark, coarse skin has transformed into a bright and flawless one that glows from within. These results last for a long time, but your beauty professional may suggest doing a chemical peel in Oakville twice or three times a year to maintain the benefits.
Aftercare and Recovery
Depending on the type and depth of your clinical peel, you will experience redness, swelling, and scaling of the skin, which usually occurs anywhere from 3 to 7 days. Your skin may be a bit sensitive during this period.
- Follow the post-treatment instructions provided to you after your clinical peel.
- Skip your usual beauty products. Do not use anything with prescription tretinoins, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums with ascorbic acid, low-pH serums, and retinoids.
- Only use the approved products advised by your beauty professional. These are usually gentle ones that will help soothe your skin.
- Avoid direct sun exposure at all costs. Wear sunblock with high SPF for protection.
Potential Complications
As with any skin treatment, chemical peels are relatively safe when done properly with the guidance of a knowledgeable beauty and healthcare expert. Some known risks may include:
- A permanent change in skin colour
- Reactivation of cold sores virus
- Scarring, which could is incredibly rare
To prevent these complications, we highly recommend going for a consultation first and doing chemical peel in Oakville as an in-clinic treatment rather than as a DIY at home so we can advise you accordingly.
